Synopsis

In the classic Mere Christianity, C.S. Lewis, the most important writer of the 20th century, explores the common ground upon which all of those of Christian faith stand together. Bringing together Lewis’ legendary broadcast talks during World War Two from his three previous books The Case for Christianity, Christian Behavior, and Beyond Personality, Mere Christianity provides an unequaled opportunity for believers and nonbelievers alike to hear this powerful apologetic for the Christian faith. -C.S. Lewis Official Website.   In 1943 Great Britain, when hope and the moral fabric of society were threatened by the relentless inhumanity of global war, an Oxford don was invited to give a series of radio lectures addressing the central issues of Christianity. Over seventy years after the original lectures, the topic retains it urgency. Expanded into book form, Mere Christianity never flinches as it sets out a rational basis for Christianity and builds an edifice of compassionate morality atop this foundation. As Lewis clearly demonstrates, Christianity is not a religion of flitting angels and blind faith, but of free will, an innate sense of justice and the grace of God.

Reviews

On Jul 14 2022, a reader said:
CS Lewis and Tolkien are among my favorite authors. Among the books written by CS Lewis, I believe Mere Christianity to be the best. This book is excellent not only for the Christian exploring his/her faith but also for nonbelievers interested in theological or philosophical debate. I especially like that Lewis uses evidence outside of the Bible so that the book can connect to non Christians more easily. Lewis is certainly a brilliant writer and I believe that this book especially makes some interesting points. I would highly recommend Mere Christianity.
On Jan 19 2016, a reader said:
No individual who reads C.S. Lewis's "Mere Christianity” is safe, despite their walk in life. C.S Lewis, employing his layman philosophical style, first challenges those 'hallway' Christians that are content being spiritual but not religious. It exposes the faulty thought process of such people by systematically outlining the decisions made in accepting this viewpoint. Then for the rest of the book, Lewis probes at the roots of the belief system of those who are already settled into the Christian way of life by analyzing how the fundamental virtues of Christianity are often misconstrued in daily life and personal theology. All along, C.S. Lewis cautions, and at times implores, readers to dismiss his arguments and even drop the book altogether if what he is analyzing does not apply. This humility, and the subsequently simple though-process, consolidates the reader to the author, which validates the honesty of Lewis's approach. Ultimately, C.S. Lewis's "Mere Christianity" quietly, yet undeniably, leaves each reader unsettled with the kind of uneasiness that pushes one to think more about what is eternal. But this time, to think soundly and simply.
