Bound in period style in full brown calf. Spine with raised bands and dark red morocco label lettered in gold. Covers in two tones, with multi-rule frames and intricate corner tools blind stamped. Exceptional condition with magnificent impressions of the multitude of the engravings.
This is Ovid's most influential work on the beginnings of Man to the time of Caesar. Ovidian influence on the English literary scene dates from Chaucer. Later on, Marlow, Spencer, Shakespeare and others were all indebted to him-either directly or through A. Golding's translation of The Metamorphoses, published between 1565 and 1567.
