New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1935. Karel Capek is famed for his first use of the word "robot," and his iconic novel "War with the Newts." He was nominated for the Nobel prize seven times. This is the second volume in his "Noetic Trilogy" (the others are "Hordubal" and "An Ordinary Life"). First published in Prague in 1934; this is a Near Fine copy of the First American Edition, translated by M. & R. Weatherall. This is a scarce title, certainly the hardest to find within the Capek canon. Dark blue cloth binding with silver lettering on the front cover and spine. Clean text; 256 pages, very bright and fresh. The dustjacket is bright and unclipped, with the original $2.00 price, but shows some edgewear, with some chipping and a closed tear on the rear; at some time the top edge was rolled over, and about 1/8" of the top front panel and head of the spine is missing. in an archival plastic protector. A superior copy of this rare work from the early Twentieth-century avant-garde.. First American Edition.. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
