About This Item

Austin: University of Texas Press, 1978. Third printing. Hardcover. g+. Folio. XX, 373, [1]pp. Original photo-illustrated dust-jacket over red cloth with gold and black lettering on spine. This remarkable work approaches the study of Indian costumes in two ways. First it examines the general history of the costume, the tools and techniques used in making it, and the nature and variation of the particular garments and accessories and how they are worn. Second, it analyzes in detail the costume of some 27 villages and linguistic groups. Profusely illustrated with 276 plates (16 in color), several detailed maps and a number of drawings and diagrams, this book is not only a valuable tool for anthropologists and students of folk art and crafts, but also a beautiful and sensitive record of a vanishing way of life. Dust-jacket partly rubbed along edges. Minor and sporadic soiling and foxing on paper edges. DJ in overall good, binding and interior in good+ to very good condition.
