About This Item

"We Are from Igarka" - propaganda of Soviet childhood beyond the Arctic Circle. Gorky, Rolland, pioneers, Igarka, exhibition in New York.

We Are from Igarka. A book written by the pioneers of the Arctic according to the plan of A.M. Gorky. Prepared for publication with the participation of S.Ya. Marshak. Compilation and supervision of the authors' work by A.M. Klimov. Illustrations. Moscow, Detizdat, 1938. 223 p.

In 1938, in Leningrad, the publishing house of the Central Committee of the All-Union Leninist Communist Youth Union "Children's Literature" printed a unique book called "We Are from Igarka". The idea to tell about "the life on the edge of the earth", about the history of their unique northern city, arose among the students of school No. 3 of the port city of Igarka back in December 1935. Maxim Gorky, to whom they sent a collective letter, liked their idea. Gorky's answer, in which he outlined his plan for writing a book, was reproduced in the local printing house of the city newspaper "Bolshevik of the Arctic", each pioneer detachment received it, and creative work began. It was coordinated by the newspaper's employee Anatoly Matveyevich Klimov, who supervised the work of the authors and compiled the book. The main text of the book was preceded by the history of its writing, the full text of the letter of A.M. Gorky, the letter of Roman Rolland, the letters of pioneers from cities and collective farms (this was the title of this section of the book), as well as the names of the authors of poems and stories and the poem "Farewell". The editor of the book was a children's writer, the author of many popular fairy-tale plays, including "The City of Masters", Tamara Grigoryevna Gabbe. The children's work was reviewed by the famous polar explorer Aref Ivanovich Mineev and the director of the Museum of the Arctic in Leningrad, historian and ethnographer Innokenty Mikhailovich Suslov, himself from Turukhansk. The book was well illustrated by the photojournalist of the newspaper "Bolshevik of the Arctic" Stepan Osipovich Malobitsky, who later became a well-known photographer in the Krasnoyarsk Territory. Immediately after the publication, the book "We Are from Igarka" was presented at the World Exhibition in New York, where it aroused great interest. The fates of the participants in the work on the book developed in different ways. Some were from exiled families, repressed, others died in World War II, many were scattered throughout the USSR. Rare book, Worldcat shows only 5 copies in libraries outside Russia.
