Charles Scribner's Sons, 1975. Book Club (BCE/BOMC) . Cloth. Fine/Good. (Book Club--unstated) Slightly smaller book, black cloth, gilt lettering near fine on spine, 310 lightly browned pages. DJ has black background to front and spine, gold and white lettering, praise on back from Robert Nye in "The Guardian," David Caute in "New Statesman," and John Bayley in "Times Literary Supplement." (Originally published in 1947, now with new foreword.) DJ has slight rubbing along front bookfold edge, very slight wear to front and spine, 3/8" tear at bottom front edge near spine, micronick at spine bottom edge, slightly rubbed at back bottom. Good+ DJ/Fine book.

Synopsis

Lionel Trilling (1905-1975) was an American literary critic, author, and University Professor at Columbia University. Among the most influential of his many works are two collections of essays,  The   Liberal Imagination  and  The Opposing Self ; a critical study of E.M. Forster; and one novel,  The Middle of the Journey . Monroe Engel was for many years director of the creative writing program at Harvard University. His books include  Fish  and  Statutes of Limitations .
