Payback., 1999. Softcover. Very Good. Middle Passage by Charles Johnson (ISBN: 9780862419073): Charles Johnson's "Middle Passage" is a compelling historical novel set in the 1830s. The story follows Rutherford Calhoun, a freed slave and rogue, who finds himself aboard a slave ship bound for Africa. As the ship embarks on a perilous journey filled with treacherous waters and moral dilemmas, Calhoun undergoes a profound transformation. Johnson's novel is a thought-provoking exploration of identity, freedom, and the legacy of slavery. It navigates the complexities of the human spirit and the moral choices that shape our destinies. "Middle Passage" is a literary journey that takes readers on an unforgettable voyage into the heart of the African diaspora and the enduring quest for self-discovery. Crisp, clean, unread book with some shelfwear/edgewear. May have remainder marks, often with a black dot or similar mark, to the top or bottom edge of the book.

Synopsis

Charles R. Johnson is an American scholar and author of novels, short stories, and essays. His 1990 winner of the national Book Awards, Middle Passage , is a historical novel set in 1830. It is focused on the final voyage of an illegal American slave ship, the Republic. Rutherford Calhoun, a newly freed slave, is desperate to escape his debt to a local gangster and his impending forced marriage to a prim schoolteacher. He sneaks onto a ship that is headed out to sea to capture members of a legendary African tribe, the Allmuseri. As the novel unfolds, Calhoun is trapped between three parties and thus begins a shocking voyage of horror, self-discovery and insurrection. A superbly written modern classic.
