Will introduction by Penelope Fitzgerald and list of illustrations. Dark purple coloured end pages. The text is illustrated with black-and-white woodcarvings by Simon Brett. 1/4 dark purple coloured cloth covered back strip with gilt coloured insert, and within that gilt insert dark purple coloured titles. 3/4 moire silk covered boards. Purple coloured slip case. First published between 1871 in 1872, the story follows many characters in distinct stories which intersect with each other. The author raises the issues of status of women, nature of marriage, political reform, religion hypocrisy, political reform and education etc. in the middle part of the 19th century in England. Rubbing of the book corners. The cloth covered boards are a little creased. A little marking to the back strip. Rubbing of the slip case and some fading at the edges of the entrance to the slip case.
