About This Item

Published by Chatto & Windus, London; 1971. 253pp. 8vo. First edition, first impression. Condition: Near Fine/Very Good.

Bound in original cloth boards with gilt title to the spine. There is a touch of bumping to the spine ends and a little sunning to the edges of the boards, but otherwise the binding is square and tight and in sexcellent condition. Inside, the pages are clean and bright and free from any damage or marking, and barely even a hint of toning to the edges.

The book is housed in it's original, unclipped jacket. There is some slight shelf wear to the edges and sunning to the spine and rear panel. There is one small tear to the front panel at edge of spine, a few marks to the rear panel and a little wear to the front , mainly the edge of the spine. These are the only points to note on a jacket that is, overall, very smart.

In all, this is a collectible example of the second instalment of Victor Sawdon Pritchett's autobiography, continuing on from A Cab at the Door. The second volume finds him in Paris, trying to earn a living and writing in his spare time. It then follows him as he becomes a reporter and travels to Ireland, during the Civil War, and Spain, where he travels large stretches of the country on foot, the mountains of Tennessee, and finally to London, broke and unknown, but equipped with the "foreign eye" that gives him his wit and originality to become one of the most gifted short story writers, critics, and travellers of his generation.
