About This Item

New York, Evanston, and London: Harper & Row, Publishers, 1968. First Edition. Cloth. Fine/Fine. 8vo, light blue-green cloth with silver lettering on spine, Mylar-protected pictorial dust jacket (unclipped) with two helmets and white lettering on a black field, map endpapers, [x] + 308 pages + [2] About the Author. An exciting novel that covers the dangers and triumphs of the '67 Arab-Israeli war. Smith Hempstone (1929-2006) was a journalist, and author, who was appointed by president George H. W. Bush to be United States ambassador to Kenya from 1989-93. Hempstone was a vocal proponent of democracy, who aggressively supported dissidents and advocated free multiparty elections for Kenya. The Daniel Moi administration derided him, and the Moi-controlled African press mocked his style as "bulldozer diplomacy." According to Hempstone's book Rogue Ambassador: An African Memoir, Moi's goons twice attempted to kill him. In the Midst of Lions continues the experienced author's deep understanding of Africa and the Middle East with his highy accurate historical fiction about the crucial 1967 Israeli-Arab conflict.
