About This Item

London: Her Majesty's Stationery Office (by Harrison and Sons, St. Martin's Lane), 1899. Large 9.25 inch 8vo., half leather with blue pebbled cloth, hinges starting (esp. top front), internally very good or better with sound binding, and both folding linen backed maps at the rear (both maps in fine condition). This copy is from the General Assembly Library of New Zealand (withdrawl sticker on front pastedown), but internally has seen very little use. Small previous owner's bookplate (HW) on front pastedown. There is a presentation stamp on the title page. There is very little browning. The 53 pp of text include a general description (geography, geology..), climate and health, inhabitants, history, communications, administration, armed forces, industries, and missions. There are 6 appendices. Vyvyan served in the Boer War. There are several copies noted in the online KVK catalog. The folding, linen backed maps are: 1. Map of the Shire Highlands District of British Central Africa..by Mr. W. Stotesbury & Surveyor Wahid Ali Khan under the direction of Mr. M. W. Anderson (19 x 13.5 inches, lithographic color, lithographed by W. & AK Johnston, with detailed topography); 2. British Central Africa Protectorate, Skeleton map to illustrate the Precis of of Information published in the Intelligence Division, Wr Office, February 1899. Lithd. at the Intell. Div. War Office May 1899). The preface indicates this volume was published just a few months before the Oct. 1899 initiation of the Boer War in S. Africa.. First Edition. Half-Leather. Very Good.

About The Prime Meridian: Antique Maps & Books

The Prime Meridian: Antique Maps & Books is owned and operated by Joel & Deborah Kovarsky. We first opened in 1998, but have had a decades-old interest in old maps, books, and paper, stemming from a comparable long-standing interest in how knowledge is used. Our business is run via the internet. We do not run an open shop, however we do welcome visitors by appointment only. Before attempting a visit, please contact us. We are a specialty business, dealing in antiquarian maps and related books (atlases, history of cartography, selected reference books, etc.). Please feel free to contact us for specific inquiries.
