London: Boosey and Co., 1894. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. 160 p. 29 cm. 8 b&w plates (I - IX, plate VIII missing) & 12 b&w line drawings. Red cloth hardcover with gold impressing. All edges gilt. Some soiling, mainly to front. Tear in cloth at lower front hinge. Corners bumped. Small label on front pastedown, large signature in blue on front free endpaper and last page of text. Some thumbing within.

Jacob Adam Kappey (1826-1907) was a conductor, composer and arranger born in the Rhineland who worked in England. He wrote the first book in English dealing with the history of military music and its instruments. Nine editions have been published.
