About This Item

Nashville: J.Geo. Harris, 1840. First printing. Pamphlet. Good -. 'An act to condense and bring into one view the militia law of the state of Tennessee.'

Tennessee has a long militia history beginning with significant service and participation in the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Mexican-American War, and Civil War earning the State its nickname of 'The Volunteer State'. This document enacts, 'That the white male inhabitants of this state between the age of eighteen and forty-five shall compose the militia....' and sets forth the brigades by County and how often they should meet etc.

Attached is a folded table of 5 forms. Forms are entitled, " A return on the strength and condition of a company of Infantry (also Regiment of Infantry), commanded by ... to the ... Regiment of Tennessee Militia, for the year 18xx. The other 3 forms printed on the sheet require the numbers of all the ranks as well as the numbers of all the swords, muskets, rifles, horses, saddles, caps, bugles, etc. Including a measure of the commissioned and noncommissioned staff and their accouterments. 'A return of the strength and condition of a Company of Cavalry...; and similarly for a Regiment of Cavalry.

8vo, 45pp pamphlet with large folding table of forms (23.5 x 19") . Bound in later stiff paper boards with cloth spine. Some evidence of damp and a light water mark at center of pages, with past mold on inside back cover. Last page of index (p45) mostly torn out. Spine worn but holding.

Still, a readable and very scarce pamphlet. OCLC: 7758341 with 14 copies.
