FIRST EDITION (1926), small 4to, 255 x 190 mm, 10 x 7½ inches, cloth backed yellow boards, silhouette illustration of children to upper cover, pages: x, 76, 35 humorous line illustrations in the verse text by the author. Cautionary tales in verse for naughty young children. Covers and corners slightly worn, upper cover slightly rubbed, lower cover dusty and damp stained along lower edge, inner paper hinges neatly strengthened, tiny worm hole to lower margin of title page and next 3 leaves, occasional pale marks to margins, 3 upper margins faintly foxed, small closed tear to 1 lower margin. A good copy. The stories owe something to Wilhelm Busch's Die fromme Helene, translated into English in 1872 as Pious Jemima. 8 items are about Maria, titles include Maria and the Inks; Maria and the Paints; Maria and the Scissors; Hilda Manners; Oliver Day (who almost drowned).
