About This Item
[c.1910]. One of a series of photos taken by William Amos Haines (1877-1953), with his subtle blindstamp to the foot of the image. Founded in 1823, Mission San Francisco de Solano was the 21st and final Californian mission, erected as a bulwark against Russian encroachment into Alta California. Restoration was completed in 1913 and today it is part of the Sonoma State Historic Park. Haines travelled through the United States in the first decades of the 20th century making early panoramas with a rotating Kodak Cirkut camera. He was particularly interested in California's Spanish missions, and took photographs of a number of these sites around 1910. Photograph. Sheet size: 20.2 x 50 cm. Ink stamp of the Santa Barbara Free Public Library and red pen mark to verso. Some minor creasing and pinholes at upper corners. Very good condition. Presented in hand finished stained oak frame with UV glass.
