This book first appeared in 1849; this is the 1858 thirty-fourth thousand. The title says the book " comprises nearly one thousand receipts for the economic and judicious preparation of every meal of the day and those for the nursery and sick room; with minute directions for family management in all its branches. Soyer's association with the reform club is mentioned here as well as his book the Gastronomic Regenerator. Soyer, ever the self-promotor, includes glowing press reports of the first edition. There are 950 number recipes starting with making toast over an open fire and ending with St. James Cake. Three is an index of recipes, a chapter on "Charitable cookery"; information on carving and on menus and serving. Much is made of economy in daily meal preparation for the average household.
