About This Item

Melbourne: Hutchinson, 1906. First Edition. OUTHWAITE, Ida Rentoul. FIRST EDITION AND RARE

'Mollie's Staircase' marked the beginning of Ida Rentoul Outhwaite's remarkable success in her international career as an illustrator. A collaborative effort between Ida and her mother Isobel, there is a "discernible air of growing self-assurance ... elves were evolving into her own distinctive creation and her dramatic use of silhouette was emerging as a major compositional device." (Muir and Holden, p. 102). Small oblong quarto, title vignette and twelve full page illustrations and margin decorations; some embrowning, mainly affecting title, and bearing contemporary inscription, in original wrappers with yap edges (sensitively restored), original silk ties, a very good copy.
