Original red cloth gilt, t.e.g. Fine, bright copy. In half morocco slipcase and cloth chemise. First edition, first issue, with the publisher's seal measuring one-half inch. Illustrated by C. D. Williams. 128, [1]pp. 1 vols. 8vo. The Duke inpersonating a Barber impersonating a Duke. After years of collecting rejection slips, Booth Tarkington's first published work The Gentleman from Indiana (1899) made him "the most famous young man in America" and quickly led to the publication of "Monsieur Beaucaire, an 18th-century romance that Tarkington had actually written first but had not been able to place with a publisher. This popular work was turned into plays... operettas, and later movies starring Rudolph Valentino and Bob Hope" (ANB). Merle Johnson page 489

Synopsis

The young Frenchman did very well what he had planned to do. His guess that the Duke would cheat proved good. As the unshod half-dozen figures that had been standing noiselessly in the entryway stole softly into the shadows of the chamber, he leaned across the table and smilingly plucked a card out of the big Englishman's sleeve.
