About This Item

Caxton Editions, 2001. New book, 184 pages, 45 photos, 8 maps, slight rubbing wear to cover. Field Marshal the Viscount Montgomery of Alemein was undoubtedly the most famous military figure since the Duke of Wellington. He masterminded the first victory over the German Army at El Alamein and went on to play a key role in the campaigns that ended Hitler's domination over Western Europe. He was very much a 'soldier's general', with the ability to consistently inspire the men under his command. However, his vain self-confidence, that often bordered on arrogance, led Montgomery to treat many of his colleagues and superiors, particularly his American counterparts, with barely concealed contempt. The shortcomings of Montgomery's personalitiy have done much to tarnish his reputation during the Second World War, and since then historical opinion has been divided on just how good a military commander he actually was. This book will survey Montgomery's career during the Second World War and then offers an assessment of his military 'genius'.. Pictorial Cover. Very Good. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.
