Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1927. Limited Edition. Half-vellum over boards. Near Fine/Slipcase: Very Good-. 12mo. Pp. [i-iv], v-vii, [viii], 1-61, [3]. In half-vellum, gilt-stamped, over pale-blue boards, gilt lettering on front board. Just a hint of age-toning to preliminary leaves. Uncut. In the paper-covered card-stock slipcase, printed label mounted on spine. A bright copy. Slipcase with edge-wear and age-toning. Edition limited to 500 copies. First edition, only printing. Sourced from the journals that posthumously fell into Houghton's hands. With a three-page note signed F.H.A. in which it's speculated this work was intended to be completed as a lecture. Thoreau's prose begins, "My friends wonder that I love to walk alone in the solitary fields and woods by night ... ." Printed at the Shakespeare Head Press, Stratford-Upon-Avon.

Uncommon: The last three copies at auction appeared 2005,1996 and 1951. BAL 20153; BORST A26.1.
