About This Item
London: Printed by Tho. Hodgkin, for R. Bonwicke, W. Freeman, T. Goodwin, J. Walthoe, M. Wotton, S. Manship, J. Nicholson, R. Packer, B. Tooke, and R. Smith, 1710. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. 8vo 8" - 9" tall. At least four prior owners, including Goodwin Louch (1741), Mr. Smith (1829), and L. Walker (1876) who have inscribed themselves in pen nicely, and than bookplate inside front flap (Frances Emma Watkins). Rebacked most handsomely in a light brown calf leather, five raised bands to spine, blind-stamped title to brown leather label at spine, perhaps incorporating original paneled calf boards, which appear sympathetic to/contemporary with the period (Miller, Books Will Speak Plain). Printed for a number of booksellers quite attractively by Tho. Hodgkin, and in apparent First Edition state, London, 1710 (Allibone, Volume II, 1454). xxxi, 1-384, [xvi pp. of Content and Errata]. Text-block is predictably waffled but yet yet and unmarked, still bright. The author was born at Bedford, was educated at Bedford School, and then studied for the ministry (1758â62) at Daventry Academy under Caleb Ashworth, says his Wikipedia entry, and in 1762 "became afternoon preacher to the independent (originally presbyterian) congregation at Mare Street, Hackney, and was ordained on 21 November 1763." He became eventually a "morning preacher" for the Church of England beginning in 1766. He ran a boarding school, too, and was friendly with the theologian Job Orton.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.
