Salt Lake City: Scrub Oak Press [Zion: W. W. Phelps & Co.], 2010 [1833]. Full Leather. Near Fine binding. 16mo. 160 pp. One of the deluxe edition composed of 29 numbered copies plus a handful of unnumbered Special Presentation Copies for the printer; all were housed in a fine clamshell box, backed in Levant goat with raised bands and leather spine label (there are another 100 copies in the regular edition)--this copy is one of the Special Presentation Copies signed by Crawley. It is letterpress-printed from photopolymer plates and on a period-appropriate, handmade paper and bound in full reddish-brown calf with a simple gilt frame on the boards and gold rules on the spine; it is an impressive replica of the most elusive of Mormon texts. The deluxe edition comprises this replica of the Book of Commandments as well as, "A Note on the Book of Commandments" by Peter Crawley (16mo. 32pp., backed in salmon calf with marbled paper over boards) and "Book of Commandments, Replica Title Pages"--2 hand-pulled, untrimmed examples of both states of the title page, housed in custom portfolio with morocco title label. The Book of Commandments was the first printed edition of the collected revelations received by Joseph Smith (later to become known as the Doctrine and Covenants); it was almost wholly lost when Phelps's printing house in Independence, MO was sacked by an anti-Mormon mob and the printed sheets scattered or destroyed. Some sheets survived, gathered up during the attack by a few members of the church; 29 extant copies were made up from these collected sheets. Crawley's "Note," written expressly for this replica edition and only available herein, offers a good history and bibliography of the book as well as a thorough census of these extant copies, including bibliographical information of most. A remarkable facsimile of an extremely important and scarce book. Sabin 50729; Streeter 1854 (both references are for the first edition).

Description:
Oxford: Printed by Leonard Lichfield, 1642 An extremely scarce 1st edition copy of Francis Potter's work. Potter (1594-1678) was a clergyman with a wide range of other interests. He was an early member of the Royal Society (admitted in 1663), experimenting with bees, theorising about blood transfusion and making instruments including a sundial. He developed a theory that the approximate square root of 666 - 25 - had a strong connection with catholic institutions. His first attempt to set this out in 1637 was described as a 'wonderful discovery' by Joseph Mede, whose 'judgement' is included in the work. This copy has been rebacked, relaying as much as possible of the spine, which has raised bands, red title label and the date at the base. The corners have been rebuilt. The boards are marbled with a stain on the rear board. Edges are scuffed. Internally there is the armorial bookplate of William Legge to the front pastedown endpaper. The endpaper joints have been repaired. Page edges are red. Contents:… Read More
