About This Item

Newton Abbot: David & Charles (HJoldings) Ltd, 1973. Very Good +/very good +. This volume is a most useful catalogue and description of all the known Romano-British mosaic pavements in Britain - about 750 in some 350 sites. Some may be seen in their original positions, some are in town or site museums, or in illustrations. A brief history of mosaic pavements in Britain is included, with a discussion on the possible sources of the designs employed, together with the materials and methods of construction. The author's painstaking research for this catalogue, the first of its kind, has involved the collection of photographs or illustrations of nearly all the mosaics in Britain to date, and the compilation of a comprehensive index of the individual motifs employed in the designs. Mrs Rainey has also carefully investigated the frequent reports of mosaics being taken up and relaid in churches, private houses or institutions. Mylar cover;brown boards with writing to spine.some bumping.dj not price clipped.minor shelf wear. clean pages and tight binding. First Edition AB72
