A non-fiction book about the menhaden, a fish crucial to the food chain of the Atlantic and Gulf coasts and integral with American history from the time of the Pilgrims to the present day. An important work that helped spur federal action to stop overfishing of the menhaden to produce oil for products ranging from lipstick to fertilizer. (By the 1870s, menhaden replaced whales as a principal source of fish oil for commercial use.) 8vo clothbound hardcover in dust jacket. 265 pp., with notes and index. B&W photographs and illustrations. Fine/Fine. Appears to be unread. Jacket is protected by a clear archival cover.
