Recently handsomely rebound in a richly gilt-illustrated red morocco at the Chelsea Bindery, with ornamental gilt stamping on front, raised gilt bands on spine, gilt line along edges and dentelling on the endpapers. Complete set of Bairei Kono's Soka Hyakushu or Kusabana Hyakushu (One Hundred Varieties of Flowers), Tokyo, Yamada Unsodo, 1901-1904.
231 color woodcut plates bound in 4 volumes, stored in a custom green-cloth slip-case. The woodblock plates printed with natural vegetable dyes for true-to-life colors.
Vol. 1: 58 plates, Vol. 2: 58 plates
Supplements: Vol. 3: 60 plates, Vol. 4: 55 plates.
Condition: pale-blue paper covers slightly worn and grubby, but interior fresh and vibrant. First page in each volume with a large red illegible stamp (two on text pages, two on flower plates). A few plates with white flowers oxidized.
Bairei Kono (1844-1895) was a Japanese painter, book illustrator and art teacher famous for his botanicals and kacho-e (flower and bird) paintings.

Beijing: Rong Bao Zhai, 1952. This is a faithful reproduction of the seventeenth century edition, made from re-cut blocks and even incorporating the blind-stamping technique of gauffrage (gonghua - embossed design). The original was first published in 1633. This edition was published in 1952 by the historian Zheng Zhenduo and the author Lu Xun. Complete work in 4 volumes with over 280 images. Wonderful woodblock prints and gonghua embossing on Xuan paper. Chinese text. In its original silk tapestry folding outer case, held together by bone clasps. Four soft back books in sandstone-coloured paper binding with gold flecks. The books and case are all in very good condition. A unique publication for The Limited Editions Club, with this also being the first edition, written specifically for the members of LEC. Dean Mitchell provides 3 color etchings for the book. Wynton Marsalis brings a 3rd dimension, who composed a 30min interpretation of Angelou's as a celebration of Jazz. A CD of the composition, which includes Maya Angelou reading her poem is included in a special compartment of the case. The book was very well received by critics, Michael Kimmelman from the New York Times, dedicated almost the entire front page of the April 26th 2002 edition to Mitchell's art. Graphite frottages on vellum over foil titles on 140lbs rag paper. Covers with quarter Kraft-tex leather binding. Title label on front board. Signed and numbered. Dirk Hagner: "A series of 11 exquisite graphite rubbings of breads from around the world. All pieces are one-of-kind images, gathered in a hand-made book binding. This project combines the oldest cultural staple of human kind, bread, with the oldest way of printmaking, rubbings, or as printmakers call it, frottage*."  Using printmaking and rubbings, Hagner presents a lovely visual discourse of bread of the world. It is a reminder of how much bread and the partaking of it together is so much apart of the many cultures of our world. This simple act of sharing bread has a sense of friendliness and comfortable interaction whether it is a bagel, a baguette, or a bun.
