Although we think of Maugham as primarily a novelist, he achieved his early success with his plays, mostly on lighter themes, starting with "Lady Frederick" in 1907, the story of a high society lady who tries to discourage a persistent young suitor. That play was an instant success with a long run in London's West End and by the next year - 1908 - he had four plays running simultaneously in London, including this one.
