About This Item

London: Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & Co., Ltd; E. P. Dutton & Co., New York,, 1928. First edition, first impression; from the To-day and To-morrow series. Inscribed by Robert Graves on the front free endpaper, "Damn and blast, said Lars Porsenna! Robert Graves, 1957". This inscription references the opening lines of Macaulay's poem Horatius at the Bridge ("Lars Porsena of Clusium, / By the Nine Gods he swore..."), and to Graves's own sister-book in the To-day and To-morrow series, Lars Porsena, or the Future of Swearing (1927). Duodecimo. Original dark purple boards, white paper title label printed in black to both spine and front board. With dust jacket. With 24 pages of publisher's advertisements at the rear. Extremities lightly rubbed, partial toning to endpapers; a very good copy in the scarce jacket, faintly soiled with chips and tears.
