A foundational work of feminism in Mexico, Mujeres Notablas Mexicanas was first published nearly 15 years after its author's premature death at age 50. As a journalist and champion of women's rights during the middle of the 19th century, Wright de Kleinhans staked her career on proving the inherent equality of women to men at a time when Mexican public life was deeply chauvinistic. To make her case, she joined learned societies that had previously only admitted men, and started a feminist journal called Mujeres de Anáhuac, which published stories of interest to female readers and printed brief biographies of important Mexicanas, prominently among them, indigenous women. The original publication is scarce, and to our knowledge, has only come to auction twice in the past five years.
