New York: Dodd, Mead & Co., 1970 In August of 1781, a negro slave won her freedom in the courts of the state of Massachusetts. It was the first time anyone of her race had dared to achieve freedom that way, but Elizabeth Freeman knew that the constitution of the state said that all were "born free and equal" and that included her.
