About This Item

Berkeley/Los Angeles: University of California Press. Near Fine in Very Good+ dj. [1973] (c.1964). First American Edition. Hardcover. (price-clipped) [only light shelfwear to book, spine slightly turned, previous owner's name and city of residence on front endpaper; the jacket is nice and clean, with the price-clipping being the only flaw]. (B&W photographs) A "revised and enlarged" translation of the first major book about legendary German filmmaker F.W. Murnau, by the almost-as-legendary German critic/historian, originally published in France in 1964. "For this first English-language edition the text has been extensively revised and expanded (two lost films have come to light since publication of the French edition and several riddles have been solved); and the complete script of 'Nosferatu,' with Murnau's own working notes and alterations, has been included." A combination of biography and critical film analysis/interpretation, it's a book that only Mme. Eisner could have written; as one critic (quoted in the jacket text) put it, "she has seen everything -- or as nearly as is humanly possible, known everyone, and forgotten nothing." Quite a decent copy of the relatively uncommon hardcover issue of this important work (there was a simultaneous trade paperback printing). .
