Music - Its Past and its Present: A Lecture Delivered by Sir Jack Westrup in the Whittall Pavillon of the Library of Congress, September 3, 1963 Louis Charles Elson Memorial Fund Publisher: Washington: The Library of Congress, 1964 Paperback 5.9 x 9.15 inches, 24 pages Louis Charles Elson - Musical composer, musical critic, born fit Boston, Massachusetts, 17 April 1848. His theoretical knowledge of music was mostly gained from Carl Gloggner, under whom he studied at the Conservatory of music in Leipsic. In 1876 he became a contributor to the "Musician and Artist," and in 1877 began contributing to the "Vox Humana," of which he became editor in 1879. He is chiefly known as one of the editors of the Boston " Musical Herald." and through his criticisms in the Boston "Courier." He has contributed articles to the Boston "Transcript," New York " Tribune," and "St. Nicholas" magazine, and has translated and arranged over two thousand German, French, and Italian songs. He has composed songs in the style of the German Lied, has published "Curiosities of Music" and "German Songs and Songwriters," and is now (1887) engaged in preparing a " History of German Song."
