About This Item
Saskatoon: University of Saskatchewan. Good in Good dust jacket. 1977. First English Edition. Hardcover. 0888800037 . "At the age of 34 Bernhard Hantzsch left Dresden in July, 1909, with the material support of several German scientific groups to explore the west coast of Baffin Island. He had already carried out summer zoological expeditions to Iceland and Ungava Bay, and knew something of the conditions he was likely to encounter. He planned to rely on the help of the Eskimos and to travel with them from Cumberland Sound across Baffin Island to Foxe Basin, north and west to Fury and Hecla Strait, and then on to Pond Inlet. Although these journeys had all been made by Eskimos, the country was completely unknown to white men. Hantzsch's account describes in great detail how he achieved part of his objective, the difficulties he encountered, and the sickness that caused his death on the coast of Foxe Basin, near the mouth of the river that now bears his name." - Foreword. pp. xxii, 396. Bibliography, Eskimo Glossary, General Index, Natural History Index. Text in English, translated from the German. Pristine 25"x19" two-colour map entitled "Bernhard Adolf Hantzsch's Journey 1910-1911 A Map" stored in pocket inside back board. Remnant of small address label atop front free endpaper otherwise book tight, clean and unmarked with moderate wear. Average wear to dust jacket now preserved in glossy new archival-grade Brodart.
