About This Item

New York: Desmond FitzGerald, Inc. [1913], 1913. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good+. 8vo. [20], 338, [2] pp. Sea-green cloth with gold lettering on the front board and spine; top edge gilt. Illustrated by a frontispiece portrait of Admiral Samuel Francis Du Pont, eight black and white plates, and a fold-out facsimile of a letter written by James Buchanan. Elizabeth Douglas van Denburgh was the daughter of Joel Turrill, who was appointed U.S. Consul-General to Hawaii by President James K. Polk in 1845. This book is her recollection of her family's journey from Oswego, N.Y., to the Hawaiian islands. The author also recounts some of her time as a resident of the islands. A fascinating narrative of nineteenth-century seafaring, capturing a child's perspective on colonialism and global travel. A Very Good+ book with the gilt on the spine faded, occasional foxing to a few leaves. Several gatherings unopened.
