[Originally and first published May,1918 (UK),this edn the first reprint,also in the same month,May,1918.] VG+.No owner inscrptn.Bright,fairly clean,publisher's original dark green cloth boards with bright,crisp,blocked black ink double lined bordered edge with decorative motif within each corner,a further vertical rectangular double line border within the first border with a similar black ink blocked decorative motif to each vertical border containing crisp,blocked black ink cursive copperplate lettered title+ author,rear board with a similar decorated panel at head of spine and blocked black ink letters,rear board undecorated; with negligible shelf-wear,bumping or creasing to edges and lightly bumped corners - no nicks or tears present.Off-set foxing to both pastedowns with off-set foxing from both pastedowns to both free endpapers.Top edges inevitably aged/toned,fore-edges similarly but with minimal,sporadic foxing/spotting; contents bright,tight,fairly clean,solid and sound - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners,appears unread - apart from my own collation.UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,v-vipp+1-364pp [paginated] includes a preface by Helen Choate Prince,diary extracts from 11th August 1914 to June,1917; plus [unpaginated] half-title+title pages,and publisher's 6pp advert to rear.
Mary Alsop King Waddington (b. April 28,1833 - d. June 30, 1923.) was an American author.She particularly wrote about her life as the wife of a French diplomat.Mary was born in New York City,New York on April 28,1833 the daughter of Charles King (1789-1867),an American academic,politician,newspaper editor and the grand-daughter of U.S. Senator Rufus King (1755- 1827),the Federalist candidate for both Vice President (1804 and 1808) and President of the United States (1816). In 1874,she married William Henry Waddington (1826-1894) in Paris. Waddington was a French statesman who became the Prime Minister of France in 1879,and later French Ambassador to the United Kingdom from 1883-1893.During World War I,she helped raise funds for soldiers and refugees,as described in this book.
She was also the author of 'Letters of a Diplomat's Wife.' (1902), 'Italian Letters of a Diplomat's Wife.' (1904),'Chateau and Country Life in France' (1909),and 'My First Years as a Frenchwoman' (1914).
Helen Choate PRINCE,author,was born in Dorchester,Mass.,Nov. 26,1857;daughter of Edward Euerton and Miriam Foster (Choate) Pratt; granddaughter of George and Abigail (Lodge) Pratt and of Rufus and Helen (Olcott) Choate; a paternal descendant of Governor Walley of Connecticut,and a maternal descendant of the first Choate,who made his home on Choate Island,Essex,Mass.,early in the seventeenth century.
She received her education in private schools in Boston,Mass. She was married June 7,1881 to Charles Albert Prince of Boston,Mass.,and after 1893 made her home in Paris,France.Her published books include: 'The Story of Christine Rochefort' (1895),'A Transatlantic Chatelaine' (1897 ),'At The Sign of the Silver Crescent' (1898) and 'The Strongest Master' (1902).
