The author's final work, it remained unfinished at the time of his death, in June 1870, and has prompted much speculation as to the resolution of the mystery. 6 parts bound in 1 volume, octavo (213 x 133 mm). Contemporary half calf, titles in gilt to red morocco spine label, marbled boards, green endpapers, red speckled edges. Engraved frontispiece by J. H. Baker, vignette title page and 12 plates after S. L. Fildes as follows: two plates in each part, part VI also provided the frontispiece and engraved title. A hint of wear to extremities, occasional faint foxing; a very good copy indeed.
