About This Item

Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1983. Hardcover. Very Good in Very Good DJ. 5th printing of the American trade edition, very good hardcover shows touch of soil and shelf wear to covers, light soil and small faint stain at bottom page edges, name and date at top of front endpaper, faint corner wrinkle at top of last couple of pages and some other light trace wear, in very good dust jacket (price at flap) that shows edgewear that includes a bit of wrinkling and an inch wide by 3/4 inch deep open chip at top edge of rear panel near corner. 502 pages with endpaper maps and translation by William Weaver. Still an attractive copy of this first novel from Eco that was turned into the movie of the same name.

Synopsis

The Name of the Rose, a novel by Umberto Eco, is a historical whodunnit — a murder mystery set in an Italian monastery in the year 1327. It is an intellectual mystery combining semiotics in fiction, biblical analysis, medieval studies and literary theory. First published in Italian in 1980 under the title Il nome della rosa, it appeared in 1983 in an English translation by William Weaver.

Reviews

One of the best mystery novels of all time! It is set in the middle ages and as well as being a mystery it also dives into a lot of political, religious, and philosophical issues of the time. It offers amazing insights into everything that is happening there and a thrilling chase for a serial killer on who's killing anyone who gets their hands on one book, in a secluded benedictine abbey
