About This Item

London, Hodder & Stoughton, 1936. . First edition, 8vo, xvi, 310 pp., numerous photographic illustrations throughout, drawings in text by Bip Pares, decorated endpapers, publisher's black cloth, black lettered; superb publisher's pictorial dust-wrapper, corners slightly worn; a very good copy.
'Shipton was a natural choice for the Mount Everest expedition of 1933 on which he reached 27,900 feet, but the experience of those two lavishly organised undertakings convinced him that this was the wrong way to travel in the Himalayas and his next venture was in stark contrast. In company with [Harold] Tilman and three Sherpas he spent three months in Garhwal Himalaya living largely off the country and at a total cost of £286. Instead of travelling as sahibs and retainers they went as companions, sharing the same food and privations. In this remarkable journey they forced an entry, for the first time, up the formidable Rishi gorge and into the Nanda Devi sanctuary which, with its satellite peaks, they surveyed' (ODNB).

An account of one of the 'great pieces of mountain exploration' by the author and Tilman which took place in 1934. A scarce title and difficult to find in good condition with dust wrapper.
Neate S63, Yakushi S431.
