About This Item

Hardcover decorative paper boards with illustration and red text to spine are protected by a beautiful decorative, unclipped, dustjacket that is in near perfect condition. The spine, boards, and or corners, are in near fine condition with all corners sharp and with no blemishes or wear. The binding is straight and tight, hinges are firmly attached with no cracking to the decorative end pagers. Text block is firm with all pages attached. The interior pages are clean with no tears, no chips, or previous owner marks. Over 300 illustrations in color and black & white, both in text, full page and lavish two-page spreads "reveal the profound effect Napoleon's legacy has left on the world." Oversized and heavy.

Napoleon Bonaparte (1769 – 1821) was a French emperor, military commander, and political leader. Today his political and cultural legacy endures as a celebrated and controversial leader. He initiated many enduring reforms, but has been criticized for his authoritarian rule. Considered one of the greatest military commanders in history with his wars and campaigns still studied today at military schools around the world. Historians still debate whether he was responsible for the Napoleonic Wars in which between three and six million people died. Gérard Gengembre's enthralling book "includes rare and previously unknown art and ephemera featuring the likeness of the great leader, including many portraits, châteaux and palaces, battlescapes and scenes of grandiose ceremony as well as reproductions of clothing, jewels, furniture, porcelain, and silver, each a paradigm of Empire elegance"
