About This Item

London: Printed for Thomas Boys, 1822. xv, [3], 256pp. With a half-title. Uncut in original publisher's drab paper boards, printed paper lettering-piece to spine. Rubbed, joints starting, loss to spine, lettering-piece chipped, corners bumped. Very occasional light spotting. The first edition, in original unsophisticated state, of Bernard Barton's (1784-1849) fifth volume of poetry. The titular poem, at 118 Spenserian stanzas, is by far Barton's longest. Highly influenced by the author's Quakerism, the poem is more a commentary on Christian pacifism than it is a reflection of the character of the French Emperor - to the extent that the Literary Speculum (June, 1822), in their rather dismissive review, suggested it could well have been entitled 'Julius Caesar', 'Alexander', or 'Tamerlane'. Jackson p.483.. First edition. 8vo.

Antiquates Ltd

Antiquates Ltd was established by Tom Lintern-Mole in 2007; we travel far and wide to buy, sell, and advise on rare books and manuscripts.

Concentrating on hand-press printing and early modern manuscripts, we pride ourselves on offering a varied selection of antiquarian works on a diverse range of subjects, leaning towards the interesting, the important, and the unusual.

We have a countryside bookshop in Wareham; we also regularly issue catalogues - do ask if you would like to be added to our mailing list - and frequently exhibit at regional and national book fairs in London, Bristol, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Oxford, and York.

We also offer a valuation service (for either insurance or probate purposes), as well as advice on library development.
