About This Item
Kegan Paul,, 1939. 8vo., Best Edition, with folding map as frontispiece, 5 battle-plans on japon and 4 large folding maps; red cloth, gilt back, backstrip very lightly sunned else a very good, bright, clean copy in price-clipped dudstwrapper. Becke's account was first published as two volumes in 1914 and rapidly established itself as one of the most important twentieth century studies. A revised and expanded edition was issued as a single volume in 1936 (here reprinted), firstly to incorporate much new matter and secondly to assist readers and scholar in following more easily the campaign in its entirety. Nothing essential was sacrificed in the compression; six new sketch maps replaced many previous pages of print, and nearly all footnotes were eliminated by including their information directly in the text. Includes a bibliography. Scarce in anything like this condition. Sandler 274 (recording the first edition).
