First Alsop edition of this harrowing captivity from the Northwest coast, without the rare portrait of Chief Maquina as frontispiece. This is the second edition overall (First was published in 1807), with substantial contributions by Richard Alsop who interviewed John Jewitt (1783-1821) in Middletown for further details. Jewitt was one of two survivors after the attack on his ship in Nootka Sound. He was enslaved by the chief Maquina and spent three years in captivity until finally rescued. Includes a one-page vocabulary of Nootkian words at p. 5. Pillings "A list of words in the Nootkian language, the most in use, p. 5; War song of the Nootka tribe, p. 204. Middletown, CT: Seth Richards, 1815. Second Edition. 12mo (18cm). Contemporary full marbled sheep, titled in gilt on spine; plain endpapers; 204pp; wood-engraved frontispiece. Ownership inscriptions to front pastedown. Sound, externally rubbed with minor wear, internally rubbed and foxed, with horizontal tears to three early leaves, frontispiece and title page somewhat tattered and chipped, loss to frontispiece affecting image, but complete and Good. Jewitt spent two and a half years as the captive of the Nuu-chah-nulth (Nootka) people in what is now British Columbia from 1803-1805. His memoir, now a valuable account of Nuu-chah-nulth culture, went into several editions. In 1815 it was also published in New York, and in Middletown under the imprint of Loomis & Richards.
