A SERIES OF NARRATIVES ILLUSTRATING THEIR HEROISM, SELF-RELIANCE, GENIUS AND ENTERPRISE. Occasional light foxing, else G. In report covers. This expedition, taking place several years after Texas had won its independence, was partly in response to the so called Dawson Massacre. The members of the Mier expedition were captured and sentenced to die by Santa Ana, but later only one out of ten were executed after the famous Black Bean lottery, in which those drawing black beans, which comprised one black bean for ten white ones, were executed and those drawing white were not. This incident was the subject of a famous painting, titled THE DRAWING OF THE BLACK BEAN by Frederic Remington..
