About This Item

Chicago, Illinois: R. R. Donnelley and Sons Company, 1929. Hardcover. Very Good. A large Lakeside Classic of 585 pages plus an additional 34 pages of a historical introduction by Milo Milton Quaife, University of Chicago PhD, and the Original preface plus a reproduction of the title page of the original publication by Harper & Brothers in 1844. Just before Chapter one of the text there is a fold-out map showing the route of the Santa Fe expedition. There are no tears or extraneous folds on the map. There is a tissue guarded captioned frontispiece entitle "Scamper Among the Buffalo". There are no tears on the tissue. The top edge of the pages are gilt. The outer edge of the pages are deckled. This work is the first of the "red lakesides" and the front cover has a gilt border with a gilt emblem of the Lakeside Press in the center of the front cover. Gilt lettering on the spine is sharp. There is light wear at the head and tail of the spine. Most of the pages in the work are white but some of the pages exhibit age toning. The volume itself is protected in a clear archival quality cover, which is easily removeable, if desired. These early Lakeside classics are becoming quite scarce. All in all, a quite presentable copy; available for immediate shipment, carefully packed in a sturdy box!
