About This Item
Whittaker and Co., London, 1845. Very Good/No Jacket. 372 pages (complete). A sturdy copy. Signed on the front pastedown by Henrietta M Hamilton - the wife of Sir Charles Hamilton (2nd Bt) who was Governor of Newfoundland. She is most known for her portrait of aboriginal Beothuk Demasduit, and is considered by many to be the only representation of an aboriginal Beothuk taken from life. Below her signature is the bookplate of her son Sir Charles John James Hamilton, 3rd Bt. Hamilton was a British army officer. He was a colonel in the Scots Guards and fought in the Crimean War, most notably at the Battle of Alma. Sir Charles's library stamp may be found fore and aft. The boards are worn, faded about the edges, scuffed and marked by age and handling. The spine has wear to the head and foot and the seams, however, it is also firm and sure. The boards are steady and sound. The papertrims have general shelving tanning. The contents are most pleasing. Aside from some slight signs of age, the pages are thick, tight, clean, clear, very confident, assured, orderly. fk. Our orders are shipped using tracked courier delivery services.
