London: Richard Bentley, 1840. First edition. Two volumes, 8vo. xv, 402, 1 leaf (ads); viii, 395 pp. With engraved aquatint frontispieces and a folding chart. Original cloth, recased with expert repairs to the extremities of the spines. An exceptionally clean and fresh copy, seldom found in the original binding. Bennett sailed on the Tuscan, an English whaling ship, and made calls at Pitcairn, Tahiti, and the Marquesas, with three in Hawaii. Bennett's work was regarded by Herman Melville as one of the best written works on whaling. and it was one of the major sources for the Cetology section of Moby Dick. Forbes 1192; Hill 113.
