Best-known as a member of the Bauhaus School in Chicago, where he was a student and subsequently an esteemed colleague of Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Lerner photographed between 1935 and 1940 the legendary Maxwell Street in Chicago, "the world's largest flea market", a document of the Great Depression as well as Chicago's resilient spirit as a city.
