About This Item
Cambridge: University Press (James R. Osgood & Co.), 1884. 1st Thus (Limited Ed.). Hardcover. Fair/No Jacket. 6" x 9 3/4. FAIR-GOOD/NO DJ. Collectible biography of the great American writer. Large Paper Ed., with these being #18 of 350 copies printed. Vol. I, 505 pp; Vol. II 465 pp. Text in both book is very clean, with rough-cut edges. There is a tiny bit of foxing in early pp; p.o. bookplate on inside front covers (only sign of ex-library ownership). Beige paper-covered boards are scuffed on edges and corners, with some browning and spotting. Spines are water stained, with much of the paper covering on Vol. I torn away, although the title is clear on both volumes. A number of original engravings, with frontispiece of young Hawthorne (tissue missing in volume one). Tissue covers have darkened considerably. For their age, these are a very nice pair of collectible books. For two large books, extra postage may be required.
