Two volumes in one: National Tales and Humorous Tales, both scarce titles. Burgundy cloth with gilt titling and decoration to spine. Top page edges untrimmed, a few unopened including title. 496 pp + 15 pp publisher's ads. Light wear and fading to cloth but an attractive copy. Browning to paper and offsetting to endpapers. Contents clean without bookplates, inscriptions or other markings. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Thomas Hood (1799-1845) was an English poet, humourist, publisher and editor. Though he was known for his humour, Hood also depicted the working conditions of the poor in poems such as 'Song of the Shirt', 'Song of the Labourer' and 'Bridge of Sighs'. William Michael Rossetti called him "the finest English poet" between the generations of Shelley and Tennyson. Heavy/oversize book.
