New York: Carlton & Phillips, 1855. First edition. Hardcover. Good. tips worn through, corners bumped. Clean and tight; all edges gilt; brown and gilt decorated blind-stamped cloth. Abel Stevens (1815–1897) was an American clergyman, editor, and author known for his books on Methodist religious history. He wrote History of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the United States of America, an early history of the church that is frequently referenced in historical works, and A Compendious History of American Methodism. Some of the articles : A detailed description of the last witch trial in 1691; The opium trade in the east; Badges, history and design; Persian Poetry with Samples; Israel and the Pyramids; Metaphysical Spectacles; Ecclesiastical Life in the Middle Ages; Artic Research; The Christian Negro (a discussion of faith with a plantation slave); 'The Drunkard's Bible" etc...
