New York: Arno Press and New York Times, 1970. Hardcover. VG (A few small tears at heads of spines, otherwise clean.). 4 vols. Green cloth, gilt letters on spines and front covers, with gilt decoration on front cover; 1582 total pp., 100+ BW engravings. The complete four-volume set, a reprint of the original published between 1834 and 1839. With a new introduction by Robert G. Stewart. Contains biographies and portraits of 144 "distinguished Americans" of the first decades of the United States, as rendered by 50 artists and 24 engravers. "In many cases, the portrait engravings from it have become the best known likenesses of the subjects, and are still being reproduced as likenesses, but now through photographs of the engravings." (p. xi) The fourth volume includes an index to the subjects, artists, and engravers.
